Meta's free plugin scaffolds bare HTML/CSS/JS glasses apps. Useful, and we ship it pre-vendored under .claude/skills/ so you get /test-on-device, /publish-to-vercel, /qr-code live on clone. What Meta does not ship: a typed 600×600 + D-pad React component library, a Next.js companion for sign-up and billing, Stripe wiring, Clerk auth that pairs to the glasses over your network with a single on-glasses approval, a Convex backend with shared session, or an AI-driven setup that gets you to a working stack in 20 minutes. GlassKit is the SaaS layer Meta deliberately leaves to you. And on top of that you still get every Meta skill, in the same project, day one.

Can I ship a $4 one-time game on this? I don't want Pro/Team tiers.

Yes. Payments is an opt-in add-on. The base boilerplate (Clerk + Convex + landing + dashboard + glasses pairing) boots cleanly with no billing surface, no Stripe required. Enable Payments later with `pnpm run addon enable payments`. That single command flips the relevant `.disabled` files back to active and inserts the import / route / schema content where it needs to go. Same opt-in model for Email and AI: clone, sign in, deploy in 15 minutes, add each integration only when your product actually needs it.

Why a Vite glasses app and a separate Next.js companion?

Short version: users can't type a card with a D-pad, so the companion owns sign-up and billing; Meta Web Apps are 600×600 single-screen, so a Vite app is the right tool for the glasses side; both share one Convex backend, so the Clerk session carries from companion to glasses once you tap your Display on /pair and approve on the glasses, or, when the two devices aren't on the same network, by typing the short code the glasses show.

Do I need to own the Meta Ray-Ban Display ($799 hardware)?

Accepted Answer

No. The glasses app runs in your browser locally with arrow-key D-pad simulation, and Chrome DevTools can override the motion, orientation, and GPS sensors. You only need the hardware for final on-device testing. Most developers build most of the app before buying glasses.

Can I actually publish a glasses app right now?

You can build today, test on-device, and share a web app with anyone who has its HTTPS URL and developer mode enabled. There's no public app store yet; Meta says broad publishing is planned for 2026. GlassKit gets you fully built and tested so you ship the day it opens, instead of starting the wiring sprint then.

How long does setup actually take?

About 20–30 minutes the first time. Setup walks through five SaaS dashboards (Convex, Clerk, Stripe, Resend, an AI provider), but it's AI-driven, not wizard-driven. Open the repo in Claude Code, Cursor, or Codex, point it at the root `AGENTS.md`, and it collects the keys conversationally, writes both .env.local files, populates the Convex dashboard env vars via `pnpm exec convex env set`, runs Convex codegen, and tells you exactly what to name the Clerk JWT template (the #1 community footgun, solved). After that, `pnpm dev` and you're shipping.

No. We ship Anthropic + OpenAI + Llama API wired through Vercel's AI SDK. Toggle providers with one env var. Streaming and function calls work across all three.

It's built for them. Every workspace ships a tuned AGENTS.md: app/AGENTS.md embeds the full Meta Web Apps spec (600×600, additive display, D-pad focus, sensor APIs) so an AI agent can't drift off-platform. CLAUDE.md and .cursor/rules point at the same guidance, so Claude Code, Cursor, and Codex all get it. Meta's official Web Apps plugin ships pre-vendored under .claude/skills/, so /test-on-device, /publish-to-vercel, and /qr-code are live in Claude Code the moment you clone the repo.
